I love to make the majority of Aspen’s baby food. Yes, we still buy some of the organic jars and pouches. Let’s be honest, we don’t always have the time.
The Beaba Babycook is a great product if you use for making your little’s food. I highly suggest getting the double rather than the single sided one. You can make larger recipes and also be steaming veggies on one side while blending on the other.
Another reason I love to make baby food is because I can choose the ingredients I know my little will like. A lot of the recipes contain apples, which are too sour to her. Aside from a classic sweet potato moment, Aspen’s favorites seem to be avocados and bananas so I include usually one or both in my recipes.
It is a lot of fun to mix and match the flavors for them. I like to pick one savory flavor and one sweet. For example, carrots + banana.
Below are a couple of recipes I use including banana and/or avocado. All recipes yield four baby food size jars.
Happy feeding!
*Tips + tricks*
[One thing I have experienced is that the avocado browns and gets very potent if stored in the fridge. Squeeze a little lemon juice in your mix and freeze immediately for good keeping. Secondly, finding bananas that are the perfect ripeness can be difficult. For banana recipes try mixing in a couple pre-made jars of organic banana baby food. The texture is really smooth for blending and it always tastes great! Lastly, always start with the littlest amount of water when adding to your purées. Watery baby food does not taste good and it can be a huge feeding mess!]
Carrot + Banana purée :
2 cups baby carrots
3 bananas
4 tbs water
Directions- Steam or boil carrots until soft. Peel and slice banana into small pieces. Once carrots have finished cooking, drain and blend in bananas. Slowly add water until smooth (I like to add the water used to steam or boil for extra flavor). Separate into jars.
Avocado + Banana purée:
2 large avocados
2-3 bananas
2 tbs water
1/2 tbs. lemon juice
Directions- no cooking necessary! Half and de-seed avocado, scoop out center and roughly chop, Peel banana and cut into small pieces. Blend. Slowly add water until mixture is smooth. Blend in lemon juice. Separate into jars.
Blueberry + Banana + Avocado purée:
8oz blueberries
2 bananas
1 large avocado
Directions- Peel and slice bananas. Blend blueberries. Half and de-seed avocado, scoop out center and roughly chop. Add bananas and avocado to blended blueberries. Slowly add water until mixture is smooth. Separate into jars.
